Life story
Vojtech Zamarovský was born on 5 October 1919 in Zemianske Podhradie. He studied law and economics, but the love of his life became the ancient civilizations. He became the best-known Slovak populariser of ancient history.
In his books about ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, Sumer and the Hittites he achieved what few could — turning scholarship into a captivating narrative accessible to everyone. Works such as Behind the Seven Wonders of the World and Gods and Heroes of the Ancient Myths raised generations of readers.
He wrote with both passion and precision, travelled to archaeological sites and verified the facts on the spot. His books appeared in many languages and opened the gateway to the world of antiquity and ancient empires for hundreds of thousands of people.
He died on 26 July 2006 in Prague, where he spent much of his life. He remained a storyteller of history who proved that knowledge of the past can be an adventure as gripping as any novel.
