Life story
Vladimír Dzurilla was born in Bratislava. He joined the Slovan goal in 1959 and just a year later came his first call-up to the national team; he made his debut in November 1960 against Sweden.
He spent four decades playing hockey at the highest level. He was world champion in 1972, 1976 and 1977, won a silver medal at the Olympics in Grenoble in 1968 and bronze at the Games in Innsbruck and Sapporo. In 1965 he was named the best goaltender at the world championships. His performances at the Canada Cup in 1976 remained unforgettable.
He ended his playing career in 1982, having previously won the title of German league champion with Riessersee. He then coached — Slovan, Brno, Swiss Olten, Eintracht Frankfurt and finally Düsseldorfer EG.
He died on July 27, 1995 in Düsseldorf from heart failure. In 1998 he became a member of the IIHF Hall of Fame. He is buried at the Slávičie údolie cemetery.
