Life story
Ondrej Nepela was born on 22 January 1951 in Bratislava. He first laced up his skates as a small boy, and his talent showed early — at just thirteen he competed at the Olympic Games. He became the most successful figure skater in Slovak history.
Between 1971 and 1973 he won three consecutive World Championship titles, along with five European Championship titles. The crowning moment of his career was the Olympic gold medal at Sapporo in 1972 — until then the greatest success of Czechoslovak figure skating.
He was distinguished by flawless technique, elegance and immense discipline. After his competitive career he devoted himself to exhibitions and coaching abroad, above all in Germany, where he passed on his experience to the young.
He died prematurely on 2 February 1989 at the age of 38. He is buried in Bratislava, where a winter stadium was named in his honour. He remained a model of sporting perfection and of quiet, focused beauty on the ice.
