Life story
Miroslav Žbirka was born in Bratislava. His parents met in London in 1943, where his father served as a Czechoslovak soldier — his English mother gave him both language and a feeling for British pop music, which could be heard in his songs throughout his life.
He was a co-founder of the band Modus, with which he won at the Bratislava Lyre in 1977. He began his solo career in 1980 with the album Doktor sen; in 1982 he became the first Slovak Golden Nightingale. The albums Sezónne lásky, Roky a dni, Nemoderný chalan, Chlapec z ulice and many others followed, some of them also in English versions.
Success did not leave him even after 1989 — he won Slovak and Czech music awards and recorded new albums. He managed to record his fifteenth and last studio album Posledné veci before his death.
He died on 10. novembra 2021 in Prague. He is buried at Olšanské cintorín.
