Life story
Martin Kukučín, whose real name was Matej Bencúr, was born on 17 May 1860 in Jasenová in the Orava region. He trained as a teacher, but his thirst for learning led him to the medical faculty in Prague. He began to write while still young and became the founder of Slovak realist prose.
In his short stories and novellas he captured, with compassion and gentle humour, the life of an Orava village — its people, its customs, and its small everyday dramas. Works such as Neprebudený, Rysavá jalovica, and Keď báčik z Chochoľova umrie belong among the treasures of Slovak literature.
As a physician he went far away for work: he served on the Dalmatian island of Brač and later among Croatian emigrants in South America, in Chile and Argentina. Even from afar he remained faithful to the Slovak language, and in his sweeping novel Dom v stráni he portrayed the world of a Mediterranean island.
He returned to his homeland only for visits. He died on 25 May 1928 in Pakrac, Croatia; his remains were brought home and laid to rest in the National Cemetery in Martin. He left behind a body of work that still teaches us to see the beauty in ordinary life.
