Life story
Martin Benka was born on 21 September 1888 in Kostolište near Malacky. He trained as a house painter and, through drawing, made his way to art. His studies in Prague turned him into a painter who gave the Slovak land and its people a form on canvas.
He is regarded as the founder of modern Slovak visual art. His monumental paintings of mountains, valleys and mighty figures of peasants and shepherds created an image of Slovakia that etched itself into the national memory. He painted with love and with pride.
He travelled the whole country with a sketchbook in hand — from the Tatras to Záhorie. He also devoted himself to book illustration and graphic art; his designs adorned books, banknotes and stamps. He understood art as a service to the nation and its identity.
He died on 28 June 1971 in Malacky and is buried at the National Cemetery in Martin. He bequeathed his house and work to the state — today his museum stands in Martin. He remained a painter who taught Slovaks to see the beauty of their own land.
