Life story
Mária Kráľovičová was born in the Záhorí village of Čáry. She studied acting at the State Conservatory in Bratislava, but became a member of the Slovak National Theatre on 1 January 1948, while still a student. She then worked in the drama department of the SND for an incredible seventy-four years — she ended her permanent employment only in January 2022.
She became a star in November 1948, when Jozef Budský cast her in a dramatized version of Sládkovič's Marína. Alongside theatre, she was also a sought-after reciter; she presented Slovak poetry in recitals on three continents, from the Brussels Expo through Montreal and Havana to Hanoi and Jerusalem.
In 1979, she received the title of National Artist, in 2002 the Order of Ľudovít Štúr First Class, and in 2007 the Jozef Kroner Prize for lifetime achievement in theatre. As late as 2013, she set out on a farewell tour throughout Slovakia. She died in Bratislava in December 2022 at the age of 95.
