Life story
Ľudovít Fulla was born on 27 April 1902 in Ružomberok. He studied at the School of Applied Arts in Prague and became one of the creators of modern Slovak painting — an artist who combined folk tradition with the daring of the European avant-garde.
His work glows with colour and draws on folk art, icons and a child's vision of the world. Paintings such as Pieseň a práca brought Slovak art fame abroad. He was also an outstanding illustrator — every Slovak child knows his pictures for folk tales.
For many years he taught and shaped rising generations of artists. He devoted himself to painting, graphic art, illustration and stage design, and his hand — bright, decorative, joyful — is unmistakable.
He died on 21 April 1980 in Bratislava and is buried in his native Ružomberok, where a gallery was built for him during his lifetime, to which he donated his work. He remained a painter of light who managed to be both modern and homely at once.
