Life story
Gejza Dusík was born in Zavare near Trnava. After graduation, he began studying medicine in Bratislava, but after four semesters he left to study composition at the New Vienna Conservatory; he spent the years 1932 to 1936 there.
Even before completing the conservatory, in 1935, his first operetta A Thousand Meters of Love premiered at the Slovak National Theatre. Thirteen operettas followed, among them The Blue Rose, Turkish Tobacco, The Mysterious Ring, and The Golden Fish. He wrote most of them with his longtime librettist Pavol Braxatoris.
He is considered a pioneer of Slovak popular music and one of the founders of Slovak operetta. From 1939 he worked in the authors' association, which later became SOZA, and from 1949 to 1974 he served as its director. In 1988, the year of his death, he received the title of national artist.
