Life story
Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderón was born on 6 July 1907 in Mexico. She grew up amid the popular culture and traditions of her country, and the nature and artifacts of Mexico would remain a wellspring for her art throughout her life.
Kahlo became a painter known for her portraits and self-portraits. Employing a naïve folk art style, she explored questions of identity, gender, class, and race in Mexican society, mixing realism with fantasy in works that were often deeply personal.
Belonging to the post-revolutionary Mexicayotl movement, which sought to define a Mexican identity, she has been described as a surrealist and a magical realist. Living with chronic pain, she made even her suffering a subject of her art, and her 1940 self-portrait The Dream later became the most expensive work by a female artist ever auctioned.
Frida Kahlo died on 13 July 1954 in Mexico City, in her beloved Coyoacán. She is remembered as one of Mexico's most singular artists, whose honesty transformed private experience into work of lasting power.
