Truth is like the sun. You can shut it out for a time, but it ain't goin' away."

Life story

Elvis Aaron Presley was born on 8 January 1935 in the United States. From modest beginnings he grew into one of the most recognisable performers of his age.

A singer and actor, Presley became known as the King of Rock and Roll and is widely regarded as one of the most culturally significant figures of the twentieth century. His energetic performance style, drawing on a mixture of influences across colour lines, arrived during a transformative era in race relations.

That style brought both great success and early controversy, and it helped shape the sound of popular music for decades to come. His voice and presence reached audiences around the world.

Elvis Presley died on 16 August 1977 in Memphis and was laid to rest at Graceland, his home. He remains an enduring figure in the history of popular music.
