Life story
Edgar Allan Poe was born on the nineteenth of January, 1809. He would become an American writer, poet, editor, and literary critic, remembered above all for his poetry and his short stories, particularly the tales of mystery and the macabre.
He stands as one of the central figures of Romanticism and of Gothic fiction in the United States, and among the foremost voices of early American literature. He was one of the country's first successful practitioners of the short story.
He is counted among the pioneers of the detective fiction genre and is credited with contributing significantly to the emergence of science fiction. He was the first well-known American writer to earn his living exclusively through writing, a path that made for a financially difficult life and career.
He died on the seventh of October, 1849, in Baltimore, and was buried at Westminster Hall and Burying Ground. His influence on literature has only deepened with the passing years.
