Life story
Abraham Lincoln was born on 12 February 1809 in the United States. From modest origins he rose through determination and self-education, and the values of his early years shaped the leader he would become.
Lincoln served as the sixteenth president of the United States from 1861 until his death. He took office at a moment of profound national crisis, when the union he was sworn to preserve stood on the edge of division.
He led the country through the American Civil War, guiding it through years of great hardship. Under his leadership the Confederacy was defeated, and he played a major role in the abolition of slavery.
Lincoln's life was cut short by assassination on 15 April 1865. He rests at the Lincoln Tomb in Springfield, Illinois, and is remembered as a leader who held a nation together and expanded the meaning of its founding promise of liberty.
